An Overview of the MPEG Standard for Storage and Transport of Visual Volumetric Video-Based Coding

The increasing popularity of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) applications is driving the media industry to explore creation delivery new immersive experiences. One trends volumetric video, which allows users content unconstrained by traditional two-dimensional window director’s view. ISO/IEC joint technical committee 1 subcommittee 29, better known as Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG), has recently finalized a group standards, under umbrella Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C). These standards aim efficiently code, store, transport with 6 degrees freedom. V3C family currently consists three documents: 1) 23090-5 defines generic concepts video-based coding its application dynamic point cloud data; 2) 23090-12 specifies another that enables compression video captured multiple cameras; 3) 23090-10 describes how store deliver compressed content. Each standard leverages capabilities 2D solutions, allowing for re-use existing infrastructures facilitates fast deployment video. This article provides an overview V3C, defined in 23090-5.
